Astronauts

When it came to birthdays I was apparently a difficult child to buy for, that was at least until I discovered Lego, so when many years later the Lego movie came out, Benny essentially became my spirit animal.

In more recent times I also encountered Kerbal space program, which gives you building blocks for spaceships and a solar system to explore (or things to blow up and crash if that’s more your thing).

This is a little celebration of imagination, combining the (real world) sandbox of Lego and the (digital world) sandbox of Kerbal space program.

The Lego astronaut is based on Benny, but as his helmet is intact this is not Benny, the Kerbal is modelled after Valentina Kerman and the equation is for calculating the escape velocity.

The two astronauts were created in their own blend files for easy re-use and for this image were both appended to a third blend file. The blue plastic was created using a PBR node setup from the PBR Blender guru tutorial, you can see the difference this makes compared to a basic plastic material in the below gallery.
